1. Eligilbility Requirements


In order to be eligible for admission, the applicant must be (1) a foreign national
(i.e., foreign passport holder) or (2) a Korean national who meets the Korean Board of Education's
guidelines (e.g., five years or more abroad, green card holder, etc.). Applicants for Kindergarten
must be age five (60 months) by September 30 of the academic year of entrance.

Other criteria considered within these categories include

English language proficiency
Grade point average (GPA)
Extracurricular activities
Record of positive conduct
Number of years in an English-speaking school environment

2. Priority for Admissions

Yongsan International School is open to students of all nationalities However, because the school
cannot admit all applicants, priority for admissions is applied as follows: (1) families who are
foreign residents in Korea and employed by companies with foreign direct investment in Korea; (2)
foreign embassy staff assigned to Korea; and (3) all other students based on qualitative criteria to
help determine the match between the student's abilities and needs and Yongsan International
School's resources and capabilities.

Yongsan International School reserves the right to administer selective
enrollment when deemed necessary, proper and in the best interest of the school.

3. Application Procedures

Step 1 : Application

Complete the application form and submit with accompanying documents to the admissions office.
Applications (hard copy) may be picked-up at the reception desk located in the main lobby or downloaded as a Word or PDF file from our website.

Admissions applications for the 2007-2008 school year will be available in early February. Prospective students are encouraged to submit their completed application and supporting documents by early May, when we will begin interviewing and offering enrollment to qualified applicants for August 2007. We do accept transfer students during the academic year when space permits.

Completed applications may be submitted in person, by fax or by email to the admissions office. Accompanying documents may be submitted in person or mailed to the admissions office.

Step 2 : Qualifications

After all documents have been received, the Director of Admissions will review the application to determine eligibility and assess qualification. Admissions decisions are based on a careful assessment of each student's abilities, needs and potential in relationship to the educational program, capabilities and resources of Yongsan International School

Criteria considered in admissions include each applicant's English language proficiency, grade point average (GPA), extracurricular activities, record of positive conduct, and number of years in an English-speaking school environment.

Step 3 : Testing and Interview

After reviewing the application, if space is available, the qualified applicant is invited for testing and an interview and required to pay a non-refundable application processing fee of KRW300,000.

Generally, new students are not invited for testing and interview until returning students have completed re-enrollment for the following school year. The re-enrollment period this year will be February 23 ~ March 19

Step 4 : Acceptance
Parents are notified whether their child has been offered admissions almost immediately after the test and interview. The Director of Admissions will then place the child in an age- and academically- appropriate class.

Enrollment is not considered final until the registration fee of KRW200,000 has been received.


4. Waiting Pool


Qualified applicants who are not accepted at this time are waitpooled until space becomes
available. If a prospective student in the waiting pool is not accepted during the academic year, he/she is required to reapply for the following school year. Applications in the waiting pool do
NOT carry over to the next school year.

What type of curriculum does Yongsan International School offer?

Yongsan International School offers an academic course of study based on the American educational model for its international student body Senior Kindergarten (age 5) through Grade 12. At the high school level, Yongsan International School has an enriched college preparatory curriculum offering a range of AP courses. The school's curriculum director and curriculum review committee is responsible for selecting the textbook(s) for each particular course of study.

When will classes commence for the 2007-2008 school year?

The first day of commencement for the 2007-2008 school year will be August 16. There are 180 days in a typical school year, which is divided into two semesters (four quarter) with the first semester beginning in mid-August and the second beginning in January. The school year ends in early June for a two-and-a-half month summer break.

Yongsan International School has a total enrollment of 580 students representing over 40 different countries. About 60% of our students are internationals of Korean heritage with the remaining 40% of non-Korean origin. A large percentage of Yongsan International School parents are active members of the local business and diplomatic communities and professors of local universities.

Yongsan International School is a not-for-profit learning institution that strives to provide a high quality international education for expatriates at a reasonable price. We believe that foreign students regardless of their economic status deserve to have access to primary and secondary education. Yongsan International School understands that a sizeable portion of foreigners in Korea are from nations where living costs are considerably lower than those of Seoul or those who receive little to no tuition assistance from their places of employment. Although we have systematically raised tuition to help attract and retain excellent faculty and staff, we seek to provide exceptional educational value as an international school in Seoul.

Do you have a program for students with special needs?

Yongsan International School has a certified special needs instructor who works closely with students that have mild to moderate learning disabilities. In partnership with parents, the special needs instructor determines the student's unique educational needs, develops personal goals for the student, and determines the placement, program modifications, counseling, and other special services that the student needs through the development of an individualized education program. To date, Yongsan International School's special needs program has largely involved students with mild to moderate learning needs at the elementary school level and few students at the middle and high school levels. With additional space and greater financial support, YISS hopes to expand its special needs program over the next few years.

What extracurricular activities do you offer at Yongsan International School?

The school has the following extracurricular activities and clubs: Model United Nations, Student Government, Speech and Debate, Mu Alpha Theta (honorary mathematics society), Guardians with a Message, Community Service Club, Swim Club, Intramural Sport, Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA), and more. As a member of the Korean- American Interscholastic Activities Conference (KAIAC), YISS students compete with other international and Department of Defense schools (DoDDS) throughout Korea in interscholastic volleyball, cross-country, tennis, basketball, cheerleading, swimming, and soccer.

For the past three years, Yongsan International School graduates have had a university admission rate of 100%. Traditionally, each year about 90% of graduates choose to enroll in universities in the United States. The remaining 10% choose to attend universities in Europe, Canada, Asia or their home countries.

Our teachers are hired after completing a rigorous interview and evaluation process Each is interviewed by the principal to whom the teacher is responsible and by the headmaster. All teachers possess the minimum of a four year bachelor's degree and many hold master's degrees. All Yongsan International School teachers are certified And trained for teaching in an international context.
